Wellstream International Oil and Gas.

Wellstream International approached Advanced Lighting Technology and employed us to provide a lighting proposal for their modern manufacturing facility close to the River Tyne in Newcastle upon Tyne.
We visited the facility which was currently being illuminated with 1500 watt discharge high bay fittings which were mounted at 35m from the floor.
Wellstream were having major problems with the luminaires as they were now very old and replacement parts were very difficult to obtain. Also the fittings were overheating dramatically and at times when the lamps failed they would explode showering glass and harmful gasses to the floor below.
Initially the design caused issues to us as our Econobay T5 fluorescent highbay luminaire had not been used at this height so we had to design a revised narrow beam MIRO 4 reflector which we utilized within the luminaire. The reflector was designed specifically to punch the light down below so the luminaire would be efficient at this high mounting height. We also proposed that the Econobay luminaire would be specified with digital dimming control gear coupled with daylight sensors which would reduce energy consumption of the luminaires by dimming them down if there was sufficient daylight entering through the roof lights.
We finalized our proposal and presented it to the engineers at Wellstream who were happy with our design and placed an order for the equipment we had specified for the project.
Advanced Lighting Technology provided 218 no of our 6 x 80w T5 Econobay Luminaires for the project.
Once installed Wellstream were extremely happy with the results, energy consumption and subsequent Co2 emissions had reduced by a staggering 65% whilst the quality of lighting within the facility had been dramatically improved. Also as the Econobay uses T5 electronic control gear and lamps there is no issue with start up and restrike times which is a problem associated with the original discharge type lighting. The daylight monitoring sensors were working well and the luminaires were dimming through the day when daylight was entering the facility through the roof lights. Also as the T5 lamp has a lamp life of 20,000 hours the maintenance period for changing the lamps has halved.
We asked Wellstream once the project was complete if they thought we had provided value for money and they commented to our amazement that the cost of the Econobay luminaire that we provided was less than they were paying for a replacement ballast for the ageing 1500w discharge luminaires they had previously!
